Bites With a Twist in San Diego

August 11, 2017Blog, Things to do

Ever since Benihana brought hibachi to the United States, Americans can’t get enough of interactive restaurant experiences. Half of the reason people go out to eat is for the ambiance, so it only makes sense that we are drawn to the new and exciting. Korean BBQ’s, fondue restaurants, and build-your-own dessert spots are a fun way to mix up your next night out. Check out our favorite spots to get in on the action while you’re dining out!

Kula Revolving Sushi Bar

The future has arrived at Kula Revolving Sushi Bar. Gone are the days of asking your server for that next piece of nigiri, at Kula you enter your order on the touch screen at your table and then it’s delivered to you via the revolving bar. Not only is Kula efficient, it’s cheap too. Almost everything on the menu is $2.25, aside from sides like Ramen and Udon. You have to try their Fried Takoyaki and Real Crab California Hand Roll for the full experience. Kula is extremely popular so you’ll want to make sure you have time to wait for this fun twist on sushi night.

Monello

After you try Monello’s cheese wheel pasta you’ll never want regular pasta again. On Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s Monello prepares their featured dish tableside in a flaming wheel of cheese. Yes, you heard that right, a flaming cheese wheel. Come in on Tuesday to try their pasta special and Wednesday for their cheesy risotto. Not able to come in during the cheese wheel? Monello still serves amazing Italian fare all week. We adore the spaghetti di zafferano con gamberi, a creamy pasta with saffron spaghetti, shrimp, and prosecco cream sauce.

Shabu Shabu House

Shabu Shabu is a Japanese cooking style which involves cooking your own meal in a pot of boiling water. When you get to Shabu Shabu House you’re seated at a table with individual burners for each guest. After you’ve gotten situated your server will turn on your burner and place a pot of water on it. Once the water begins to boil you will add your sauces to create your broth, and then your veggies and desired meat. Shabu Shabu is great for birthdays and adult events, but if you’re looking to share a meal things could get tricky.

iDessert

Prepare for a dessert experience like no other. iDessert is redefining what we consider dessert with their build-your-own creations. When you arrive you will select your crust, gelato, and cream on an iPad. This will create the base, which you can add upon with a layer of flavored cake, sauce, fruit or a crunchy layer. It sounds confusing, but once you bite into the concoction you’ll realize what all the hype is about. If dessert isn’t your thing you can also build your own crepes.

Manna Korean BBQ

Everyone loves a good Korean BBQ, and Manna is the best in town. For just $30 you get all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ that you cook right at your own table. When your meat looks like it’s fully cooked you can wait for your server to flip it, or be daring and do it yourself.  We recommend trying the Beef Tongue, Fresh Squid, and the Prime Short Rib Filet. Korean BBQ is best with a big group of friends, so grab your crew and try everything on the menu.

Splash Wine Bar

Calling all Wine-O’s! Splash Wine Lounge is the best place to grab a bite while you get to try an assortment of different wines. When you arrive at Splash you’ll be given a card that allows you to pour any one of Splash’s 72 wines on tap. All by yourself! Splash is known for their tasty flatbread pizzas which pair perfectly with a glass of vino. Our favorite flatbread is the Ricotta & Mushroom, which is topped with mozzarella, spinach, mushrooms, and fresh ricotta then drizzled with truffle oil. Sign up for our North Park Walking Tour to try all that Splash has to offer!
Don’t forget your camera! These bites will look great on your Instagram feed.
