Get your Wonder Woman costume out of storage because it’s Comic Con season again. For some Comic Con is just a reason to avoid downtown, but for others, it’s an event they’ve been looking forward to all year long. Watching people wander up and down 5th Avenue in superhero costumes can put a smile on anyone’s face, but with notoriously inedible Convention Center food you’ll want to grab your grub before getting in line. Comic Con has come out with a great list of all the places you can get discounts with your pass and we’ve narrowed it down to our five favorites of the weekend. For those of you who are daring enough to venture downtown, you won’t want to miss these fantastic spots.
Le Parfait Paris
Did you go crazy when Pokemon Go came out? Then you’ll have to stop by Le Parfait Paris in between panels for their Pokemon inspired cocktails. The French bakery brings a slice of Paris to downtown with macaroons, pastries, and other French delicacies. The Pokemon inspired drinks will include the Poke Mango, Mew Berry, and Lemon Fennekin. All made with sorbet, champagne and topped off with a matching macaroon. While you’re in make sure to try one of their equally beautiful and delicious desserts. We adore all of their French treats, so grab a few macaroons to nibble on while you wait in line.
Anime fans, this one is for you. Tajima Ramen is paying homage to Naruto with their special Naruto Ramen bowl. The bowl which came out at the beginning of the week will be served until close on Sunday night for all of the anime loving Comic Con goers. The bowl includes tonkatsu broth, chasu pork, bamboo shoots, and fish cakes. If that isn’t up your alley Tajima has an array of bowls and Japanese inspired food to satisfy your Comic Con induced hunger. Some of our favorites include the Vegan Ramen, which is served with spinach noodles, and the Takoyaki appetizer, a dish that always gets the table talking. If you’re hitting the road you can stop at any of Tajima’s locations along the way.
Calling all Game of Thrones fans! Quad Alehouse will be serving Game of Thrones inspired drinks all weekend. The cocktails come with clever names like the Jon Snow Cone which includes gin, lime, blue curacao, and simple syrup over crushed ice. As well as the Theon Greyhound, which is your average Greyhound with a “gummy wiener” garnish. Poor Theon. Every cocktail needs a Bite and Quad Alehouse has you covered with an array of burgers, sandwiches, and BBQ favorites. We love their Smoked Mac and Cheese which comes with white cheddar, smoked gouda, bread crumbs, and your choice of brisket or pulled pork. Don’t have time to grab a drink? Our Downtown Walking Tour stops at Quad Alehouse every Friday and Saturday at noon.
Cocktail lovers won’t want to miss the impeccably named, and crafted, cocktails at Searsucker this weekend. Searsucker has put together 12 creative drinks to get you buzzed before, or after, a long day of Q and A’s. Some of our favorites include the Twilight Sparkle; a drink made with Absolute Elyx, raspberries, lemon and St. Germain, the Vulture; a cocktail crafted with Mezcal, Peach, Lime and Tarragon, and the Captain Underpants; crafted with rum, banana, lemon, rose, and bitters. Searsucker has one of the best brunches in downtown so you may want to grab a Bite with your cocktail. We recommend their Green Eggs & Ham or the Crab Benny.
Union Kitchen & Tap
Where some may be annoyed by the hustle and bustle of Comic Con, Union is excited and ready to nerd out with their fellow fans. Every year Union staff seems to have some of the best Comic Con costumes in Gaslamp. Not only is the atmosphere amazing, the food is truly some of the best near the Convention Center. Executive Chef Colten Lemmer has created a special Comic Con menu that includes Big Eye Tuna Poke, Crawfish Popcorn, Union Gumbo, and Mary’s Rosemary Brick Chicken to name a few. Union will also be opening at 8:30 am to feed those of you getting an early start. If you’re not hungry you can always grab a drink at the bar, or patio, to view the different costumes marching up and down 5th Avenue.
Bite to the rescue! Now we’re off to save Comic Con goers from bad Bites. We’ll see you in line for Hall H.
