Daylight savings has almost officially set in which means we get an extra hour of sleep and sunlight a whole hour earlier. For any breakfast loving #foodie daylight savings means a whole hour earlier to enjoy some of the best breakfast in San Diego! It’s time to say farewell to sleeping in and hello to that delicious 6-egg omelet with a side of bacon!

In honor of the breakfast-loving foodies in San Diego, here are our top picks for all types of breakfast from Downtown to Encinitas.

BEST PANCAKES & WAFFLES: Richard Walker’s Pancake House (La Jolla & Downtown)

Richard Walker’s,  one of our featured stops on the La Jolla walking tour, is home to the world famous Baked Apple Pancake. Baked to order and filled with fresh Granny Smith apples and a pure cinnamon glaze, this is breakfast spot you have to feast on!

BEST HASHBROWNS & OMELETS: The Potato Shack Cafe (Encinitas)

The Potato Shack Cafe off Highway 101 in Encinitas has been in operation for over the past two decades! Some of their popular menu items include anything with spuds or their 3-egg omelets like the one shown below. Taste for yourself what the “Friends of the Shack” have been raving over for years! You can also sample The Potato Shack Cafe on our Walking Encinitas Restaurant Tour.

BEST FARM-TO-TABLE BREAKFAST: Cafe 21 (Downtown & University Heights)

With 2 locations serving south San Diego county, there is no reason or excuse for not being able to grab a seat at this joint. The “flavorful menu crafted by premiere chef Layla Javadov” incorporates only the finest local, organic ingredients which exemplify the term “farm-to-table.” It’s also worth noting that they also cater large parties and events. Oh, and their sister restaurant, Zymology 21, happens to be a featured stop on our Downtown/Little Italy tour.

BEST DOUGHNUTS: The Donut Bar (Downtown)

Although The Donut Bar is sadly not a featured stop on our Downtown Bite tour (partially because they sell out before 9am every day) this is still one of the most popular and best doughnut spots in all the land. Okay, maybe not ALL the land but San Diego for sure! Featuring unique & classic flavors including the “Brad Fritter” it’s no wonder us normal people are bumping elbows with the A-listers to snag a bite. If you’re in Orange County then you’ll have to drop by their Fountain Valley location. Though we can’t say you’re guaranteed to snag one here at 9am either.

BEST BRUNCH: Candelas’s on the Bay (Coronado & Downtown)

One of our most favorite brunch spots & best views of the bay and Downtown tops this list. Candela’s on the Bay offers Sunday brunch buffets from 11am to 3pm. Patrons can enjoy an array of finely crafted modern-mex including pozole, ceviche, chile relleno, chilaquiles, pastor, tacos, handmade quesadilla’s, and believe it or not a TON more! The “Mexico City” style cuisine paired with a bottomless mimosa or sangria just really hits the spot on our “relaxation day.” Bring the kiddies along and they can also feast on some great fare like the traditional pancakes, eggs, omelettes, bacon, and assorted pastries. Aside from brunch the lunch and dinner options at Candela’s are nothing short of spectacular either. Catch a glimpse of them, and a few of our other Coronado favorites on the Bite Coronado tour.

There are so many delicious breakfast options in San Diego it was nearly impossible to limit this list to just 5. We could go on and on about some of our other favorites, but, for now, we’ll stick to these San Diego breakfast spots.

Thanks for reading and Happy Chomping, Fellow Foodie!
